Damiana Herb
Damiana has been used in a variety of supplements. But as it makes its way into many formulas do we really know what it is meant to do?

The History of Damiana Herb

Damiana is a small yellow flower that grows in the American Southwest, parts of Mexico, Central America, and some regions in Brazil. The herb has actually been around for thousands of years. Some say it was even used by the ancient Mayan cultures. Some Native American healers still swear by its use. But despite its track record among ancient cultures, what does modern science say about it?

Sexual Benefits

Many supplements are using damiana as a method of treating sexual problems among men and women. For women it is said to increase sexual pleasure and even alleviate the symptoms of PMS. For men, it’s supposed to boost libido and even treat impotency. The evidence behind this is that clinical studies among rats showed that damiana helped impotent and sexually spent rats resume sexual activities. There have not however been tests among humans to show that damiana has the same results in people.

Weight Loss Benefits

More research however has corroborated claims that damiana can help people lose weight. Many formulas have begun using it as an appetite suppressant. Studies have shown through ultrasound technology that damiana slows the speed at which food is digested and passed through the stomach and intestinal tract. This helps dieters feel full and more satisfied longer after meals. This feeling of satiation can help people curb cravings, cut back on calories, and eventually lose weight by eating less overall.

These weight loss benefits however were only observed when damiana was mixed with guarana and yerba mate. Alone, these ingredients have very limited application as weight loss supplements. Together though, studies have shown that they can help users lose significant amounts of weight when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and a decent exercise regimen. One study showed as much as 11.2 pounds over a a span of 45 days.
