TwinLab’s PM Protein Fuel is a Casein heavy protein powder that slows absorption, enabling up to 6 hours of continued amino acid release; recommended before bed, which is the time of heightened growth hormone release and muscle repair, enhancing muscle recovery and recuperation. There are many casein-based PM proteins on the market, will TwinLab meet its competition head-on?

Supplement Profile

In order of appearance:
Whey Protein Concentrate: “Whey protein is a mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties; however, human data is lacking.[1][2] The effects of whey protein on human health are of great interest and are currently being investigated as a way of reducing disease risk, as well as a possible supplementary treatment for several diseases.” J Am Coll Nutr 26 (6): 713S–23S.

Calcium Caseinate: “Calcium caseinate is a protein produced from casein in skim milk. Used mainly as meal after working out, as it breaks down at a slower rate than whey protein, thus supplying the body with a sustained amino acid release.”

Whey Protein Isolate: “Whey protein is essential in the bodybuilding world today because of its ability to be digested very rapidly and help return the post-workout body back from a catabolic (muscle-wasting) state to an anabolic (muscle-building) state. Because of their filtration methods, Whey Isolates tend to be less allergenic than Concentrates and other bovine milk or dairy products.”

Micellular Casein: “An attractive property of the casein molecule is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach, which makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. This provides better nitrogen retention and use by the body.” Proclamations of National Academy of Sciences 94.

Review

TwinLab’s PM Protein Fuel is good in concept, but fails to meet up to our expectations and most customers’ as well. To establish an effective PM formula, you want to have a product high in casein protein. TwinLabs lists casein as its 2nd and 4th ingredient, rather than its first. GNC recently pulled their PM whey protein blend and replaced it with 100% casein, which is the most effective use of protein for a slow-digesting highly slow-releasing blend. We would suggest using more casein over whey for what you’re looking for.
