Valerian Root Side Effects

Valerian Root is a common sleep aid used to treat insomnia. It’s been used for thousands of years, but does that mean it’s safe?

As with any medication or herbal extracts you might take, side effects are possible. Valerian Root is no exception. Like anything used to treat insomnia, this extract can cause drowsiness, which you hope it would. That’s really the whole point. Since it does act as a sleep aid, don’t use it before driving, going to work, or before your son’s middle school play. In other words, only take it at night.

But aside from drowsiness there are other possible side effects. Usually these are only experienced if taken in excess or for too frequently.

Final Thoughts

Again, these side effects are fairly rare. They usually only occur after taking Valerian Root in excess. Some are allergic reactions. If you start to see any of these reactions, you should reevaluate whether or not the product’s benefits outweigh the risks.
